My Bear Holiday team is thrilled to shine a spotlight on Africa’s most unique gay bear event: South Africa Bear Fest. This annual bear campsite gathering, held at the scenic Die Windpomp campsite near Pretoria, has become a beacon for a small yet growing and vibrant bear community in the region. While Africa’s LGBTQ+ landscape remains challenging, events like this offer a rare and joyful opportunity for bears to connect, celebrate, and embrace their identities in a safe and inclusive environment.
Nestled within the picturesque countryside near Pretoria, the Die Windpomp men-only campsite provided the perfect backdrop for a weekend of camaraderie, entertainment, and outdoor fun. The campsite, known for its tranquil surroundings and well-maintained facilities, is a haven for those men looking to escape the hustle of South African metropolitan areas. Surrounded by lush landscapes and local wildlife, attendees enjoyed a unique mix of natural beauty and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
This year’s programme showcased a delightful array of activities tailored to the bear community’s tastes, radiating a sense of community and fun. Highlights included lively performances around the pool by Riri Rouge, Genie Wish, and Gigi Mugler, as well as the thrilling Bear Sports competitions. The much-anticipated Mr. Bearfest Competition celebrated charm, humor, and bear pride, while the relaxed and fun-filled Bring & Braai brought everyone together to conclude the weekend with camaraderie and festivities.
As the only regular bear event in Africa, South Africa Bear Fest stands out as a unique celebration of the bear community on the continent. However, it’s important to note that the event predominantly attracts a white audience, reflecting the broader demographic and social challenges faced by LGBTQ+ communities across Africa. Despite this, the camp’s atmosphere remains inclusive, embracing diversity and offering a welcoming space for all.
The fact that South Africa Bear Fest is the sole bear weekend listing for Africa here on My Bear Holiday speaks volumes about the difficulties faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in many African countries. Homophobia, legal discrimination, and societal stigma make it challenging to organize and sustain queer events, particularly those catering to niche groups like the bear community.
Interestingly, another event listed on My Bear Holiday—the Secrets of Egypt and the Nile Cruise by Adventure Bears—provides a fascinating contrast. Scheduled for October 2025, this luxurious cruise invites foreign bears to explore the wonders of Egypt. While it promises an unforgettable experience for travelers, it does little to reflect or support the realities of the local LGBTQ+ community in Africa. This disparity highlights the challenges faced by queer individuals on the continent, where societal and legal barriers often stifle the growth of local LGBTQ+ events. The cruise, while celebratory in its own right, underscores the ironic divide between queer tourism and the lived experiences of African LGBTQ+ communities.
Despite the hurdles, there are glimmers of hope. Over the years, several African nations have witnessed progress in LGBTQ+ rights, albeit slowly. South Africa remains a trailblazer, with its constitutional protections for LGBTQ+ individuals and vibrant Pride events like Johannesburg Pride and Cape Town Pride. Additionally, Namibia’s recent recognition of same-sex marriages conducted abroad marks a significant step forward.
The organizers of South Africa Bear Fest are also committed to expanding their reach and fostering a stronger bear community. Exciting announcements for 2025 are on the horizon, promising to enhance the event’s appeal and impact. For updates, you can follow their Facebook page or reach out via email at sabearfest@gmail.com.
As we celebrate the success of South Africa Bear Fest, we also reflect on the resilience and creativity of the LGBTQ+ community in Africa. While challenges remain, events like these are a testament to the power of connection and visibility. My Bear Holiday remains committed to supporting and promoting LGBTQ+ and bear events worldwide, shining a light on the communities that make them possible.
For bears seeking adventure and camaraderie, South Africa Bear Fest is more than an event—it’s a symbol of hope and a call to celebrate diversity in all its forms.
