Latest updates about international bear weeks and holiday events!
Jan 25, 2025. When it comes to the global gay bear community, Puerto Vallarta in Mexico often takes the crown as the Latin American epicenter, with a trio of major bear festival running right now. However, let's be clear: most Southern American countries have historically struggled to establish themselves as a significant LGBTQ+ destination (not to say a gay bear destination). However, this may change soon. Woof Week Rio, set to take place in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) from January 26th to February 2nd, 2025, is changing the game by offering an immersive and vibrant international bear week that promises to attract visitors from around the world. Let’s dive into what makes this event, and South America’s bear scene, so special.
While South America isn’t new to bear-focused events, most have traditionally been limited to single-night gatherings. Events like these have been popular among their respective local bear communityies with Bigger Party hosting regular gatherings in São Paulo and Rio, and Ursound being a staple in São Paulo’s gay nightlife. These events provide an exciting glimpse into the vibrant bear culture, but they don’t offer the comprehensive experience of a full-fledged bear holiday.
Woof Week Rio fills this gap by creating a week-long celebration that combines socializing, partying, and cultural immersion. First launched in 2023, Woof Week Rio has quickly gained a reputation as a premier destination event for bears and their admirers, offering a variety of activities in one of the world’s most iconic and gay-friendly cities.
Rio de Janeiro has long been a beacon for LGBTQ+ travelers, thanks to its breathtaking beaches, lively nightlife, and welcoming atmosphere. The city’s open-minded culture and diverse community make it an ideal host for an event like Woof Week. From the iconic Copacabana Beach to the samba clubs, Rio offers endless opportunities for celebration and connection.
Woof Week Rio capitalizes on this by offering a curated program of events that highlight the city’s unique charm while catering specifically to the bear community. With activities ranging from beach outings and grand balls to sauna experiences and charity events, the week promises an unforgettable blend of fun, relaxation, and solidarity.
Thank God, no. While some major bear events are often scheduled alongside other significant happenings to attract tourists, the world-famous Rio de Janeiro Carnival will begin in a month’s time. This means you can still catch a glimpse of how the city prepares for this global spectacle while enjoying the safety and camaraderie of a true bear community. At the same time, you’ll avoid the unnecessarily high prices and overcrowded attractions that accompany Carnival. Here at My Bear Holiday, we find this strategy quite clever, as seen in similar events like Bear Carnival, which takes place just a week after the equally famous Maspalomas International Carnival. However, we may not completely understand why Woof Week's dates fully overlap with the well-established bear festivals in Puerto Vallarta (especially Beed Dip). Does this mean the organizers want to position Rio as an alternative (or just direct competition) with Vallarta? We will see how this develops in future editions.
One of the standout features of Woof Week Rio is its commitment to giving back to the community. The Grand Ball is a prime example, with all proceeds from the event going to LGBTQIA+ charities in Rio. This focus on social responsibility adds a meaningful dimension to the festivities, allowing attendees to celebrate while contributing to important causes.
Additionally, Woof Week Rio offers opportunities for cultural exchange and exploration. Whether it’s dancing to live samba at Sambear, soaking up the sun on Ipanema Beach, or enjoying a pool party at The Island, the event showcases the best of Brazilian culture and hospitality.
